What could possibly be more exciting (and perhaps nerve-wracking) than seeing that positive result on your pregnancy test? Finding out you’re having not one but TWO babies, of course! Congratulations – you are truly blessed twice over! There are so many thoughts that run through your head as you wonder how you will cope raising twins – the pregnancy, the birth, keeping up with the washing and manoeuvring a double pram through narrow shopping aisles.
One of your biggest concerns is probably feeding and whether it will be possible for you to breastfeed your two beautiful babies when they arrive. Will I have a big enough supply of milk? Will I have enough time? Will I be able to feed the babies at the same time and how will I hold them? What if I’ve had a C-section? There are so many wonderful benefits to breastfeeding – it helps with bonding and attachment to your twins, it provides unmatched nutrition support for infants and it is cheap, just to name a few advantages. You will be pleased to know that many twin mothers have successfully breastfed their babies – and even enjoyed it – with the right support. You are certainly not alone!
One of the best ways you can support yourself and your twins through breastfeeding is to use a nursing pillow. These are specially designed pillows that help to make nursing easier and more comfortable for mother and babies. A nursing pillow can help to position your twins properly so that they get a good latch and feed efficiently, as well as take some pressure off the mother’s body. From a safety point of view, it is important to remember never to leave your babies using the pillow unattended or while sleeping as this can risk serious injury or death.
So what is the best nursing pillow for twins? There are two most common types of twin nursing pillows and, in my opinion, the Twin Z is overall the better option. It is a soft, comfortable and non-toxic design that is easy to clean, serves multiple purposes beyond breastfeeding and provides excellent and much-needed back support for the nursing mother. Here is a review of the two most popular twin nursing pillows:
My Brest Friend Supportive Nursing Pillow for Twins
There are a number of great features to this nursing pillow. It has an adjustable wraparound design that can be altered to suit most bodies and includes extra back and side support for the mother to reduce back, neck, shoulder and wrist pain while breastfeeding. It is a firmer feeling foam pillow that keeps the babies close to the mother and tries to avoid any gaps where the babies could slip down in between. The My Brest Friend Twin nursing pillow is designed to allow the mother to feed her twins in three different positions – double/football clutch, double cradle with overlapping legs or combination of football and cradle hold.
The adjustable Velcro strap does get stuck on things easily which is a little frustrating. The pillow has an attached accessories pocket which is useful for storing spare breastpads, a burp cloth, your phone or a small water bottle – a very practical help for a mother stuck under her feeding babies for the next 45 minutes! The minky soft cover zips off to allow for easy washing, though the foam pillow insert is not washable and would easily get dirty from nappy or milk leaks and vomits. This is a large nursing pillow to allow both twins to be comfortably supported as they feed, so be prepared for its bulkier size and firmer shape, which might make the pillow hard to travel with.
The TWIN Z Nursing Pillow
The Twin Z pillow is an eco-friendly, nontoxic and hypoallergenic twin nursing pillow designed in a “letter E” shape that wraps around the body with the middle section propped behind the mother’s back to provide support. The pillow can also be clipped together at the front of the mother’s body to keep it secure and snug for use with tiny newborns. This pillow is a versatile 6 in 1 design that can be used for pregnancy, breastfeeding, bottle feeding, tummy time, reflux support and toddler time with twins.
Eventually your babies will outgrow any nursing pillow, perhaps in just a matter of months, so having a pillow that still has purpose beyond the early months of feeding certainly provides better value for money for you, and might eliminate needing to buy additional items down the track. It also has the option of purchasing a removable, washable waterproof cover which is a huge advantage considering how messy breastfeeding twins can be at times! Plus you can chop and change between different super cute patterns for your cushion (and find one that suits your living room décor?!). The design of the Twin Z pillow is also a little gentler for mothers who had a C-section as it doesn’t put weight or pressure on her torso while feeding. I love this pillow!
Is It Possible to Breastfeed Twins at The Same Time?
Yes! Tandem breastfeeding your twins will save you a lot of time, but it may not always be your preferred method of feeding. When your twins are just born, it is probably best to feed one baby at a time. This allows you and your individual baby time to focus on learning how to latch properly and figure out the basics of feeding. Correct attachment to the breast is crucial to build your milk supply and avoid discomfort and pain to the nipples. It also allows the mother some time to get used to holding and supporting a tiny new baby as they breastfeed, gaining confidence and familiarity for tandem feeding at a later stage. If you are out and about and need to feed your twins in public, you may prefer to feed them individually, though you can buy breastfeeding covers that could help you to tandem nurse more discretely if this is a concern for you.
Once you feel comfortable and ready, tandem feeding is usually more efficient and has even been found to increase prolactin levels – which is responsible for increasing your milk supply. It is worthwhile noting that each of your twins feeding journeys will be unique and one may have different feeding issues and preferences to the other. One baby may take longer to feed than the other or feed better in a different position. Some mothers even allocate a certain breast to each twin with the idea that over time your breasts will learn exactly how much milk to produce for each baby. Initially, to build a good supply on each breast it is usually recommended to alternate sides.
What Is the Best Position To Breastfeed Twins At The Same Time?
There are a number of positions you can use to tandem breastfeed twins and the best position for you will probably change as your babies grow and get better neck support themselves. The most commonly used positions are:
- Double-Cradle: A baby is cradled in each arm, as you would feed a single baby, with their body leaning against your torso and your hands supporting them from underneath. The babies will be facing one another in this position and can interact while feeding (they can also kick one another, which can get problematic down the track!).
- Double Football: Each baby is held as you would a football with their body tucked under your arm and your hands supporting their heads.
- A combination of Cradle and Football hold: A mix of the above positions as preferred.
- Criss Cross: Similar to the Double-Cradle position, however the babies are positioned in an X across the front of the mother’s body, with one twin in front of the other.
- Saddle Hold – Where babies are sat upright on your lap/knees feeding on each side – better for older babies and toddlers who can support themselves sitting up.
Remember you can always seek help from your doctor, midwife or lactation consultant for further assistance with positioning your twins for feeding and any attachment concerns.
The logistics of raising twins can seem daunting at first, especially the task of feeding your precious babies. With good support around you, soon enough your confidence will grow and day to day life, which will include many hours of feeding, will become much easier. Like any breastfeeding mother, taking care of your body is so important and will save you a lot of potential discomfort in the long run, and a nursing pillow can certainly help with this.
Having your hands freed up during those long days and nights glued to the couch will make all the difference, too, allowing you to read a book, check your emails or have a bite to eat – all valuable moments of self-care! I believe the Twin Z nursing pillow is without a doubt the best nursing pillow for breastfeeding multiples for its comfort, versatility and ease of use. A worthy investment to consider as you prepare for the wonderful adventure ahead of you raising twins!
